Bill Evans spent over 30 years working in the Public Affairs Office of the Church -- including a year working almost full-time helping to coordinate the Church’s support of Prop 8. Yet just a year later he was instrumental in working with LGBTQ activists to create a dialog with the leadership of the Church that led to the Church's endorsement of trailblazing new civil rights ordinances in Salt Lake City. Bill was astonished by the graciousness of those activists toward him, given his prominent role in supporting Prop 8. The collaboration with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists transformed Bill into an outspoken supporter of the LGBTQ community.
In 2013, Bill retired from Church employment. In 2015 the Church actively supported the successful passage of a statewide nondiscrimination/religious freedom bill. In 2016, Bill was appointed to the Board of Affirmation, the largest organization for LGBTQ Mormons, Families and Friends. In addition, he is involved in initiatives regarding autism, the homeless, and in promoting civility.Come hear Bill describe this amazing personal journey and his insights into what we can do to create a more loving and inclusive community.
